I designed and built a clear, easy-to-navigate website and flexible identity for the Informality Data Research Lab. A simple visual hierarchy helps people explore its research on informal work and economic data.

01 / THE IDENTITY
The ideas behind
the mark.
The lab studies informal economies through research and data. I translated its focus on people, work and the economy into a hand-held chart symbol, then developed several logo versions around those ideas for different settings.
THE DESIGN IDEA
Research, held in one visual system.
The hand creates a human foundation for the rising chart and dollar symbol. Together they make a distinct mark for the lab, while the IDRL wordmark keeps the name easy to recognize.
I prepared light and dark applications so the identity can sit clearly on both bright and deep-colour surfaces.
02 / LOGO DESIGN
Several logo
versions to choose from.
I developed a set of logo variations around the lab’s main ideas. The full wordmark and standalone symbol suit different placements, while the early explorations show how I tested ways to connect data, informal work and research.

This route places a rising chart inside a geometric frame and keeps the initials direct and legible.

This more illustrative concept combines a hand with an economy symbol and supporting research icons.

Colour and
backgrounds.
Teal anchors the identity, with pink and coral for contrast. Light and dark logo versions keep the mark clear across the background colours and surfaces used for the lab.

DESIGN PRINCIPLE
Keep the core mark consistent, then switch between colour and reversed versions to protect contrast and readability.
04 / TYPE HIERARCHY
One typeface.
Clear levels.
I chose Alexandria for a clean, contemporary feel, then set a size and weight for each level so headings, navigation and detail text are easy to tell apart.
